Listening to this record I thought “Good stuff, maybe a little LONG, good grief” and then “Ason Jones” came up and hit me, and reinforced this whole thing as some sort of testament to survival. I haven’t been hit by a track’s emotional nakedness in a long while.

Mariah Carey’s new album has a line about ODB too (albeit glibly). Needless to say, the sentiment sounds a little more sincere on “Ason Jones.”

I’ll say this; the general consensus seems to be that while there’s nothing mind-blowing in this album, at the very least it’s schooling the youngins as to the power of ghost, rae and co.

I’m not sure how it will hold up over time. I keep going back to “Canal St” and the ODB tribute, the latter of which is incredibly moving.

I have to admit: at first blush, this record didn’t do a lot for me. It was like Wu Tang Soup—bits of chunky goodness swimming in a very familiar broth. I’ll say this though, it rewards multiple listens. I’m a believer. Good review.
